Director's Message

A warm welcome at the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar (Gujarat) – a world class law university in making.

GNLU, a premier national law university of India, with its motivated staff and committed students aims to provide best public and private legal service. GNLU contextualizes the latest policy and practical developments in arts, commerce, business administration, social work, science and technology in the legal framework and studies these subjects from an interdisciplinary perspective. GNLU is the largest NLU of India in terms of student, faculty and research associates strength, five UG specializations, research and training programs and centres, student scholarships and funds and campus facilities and acreage.

GNLU Students: Our students, admitted through common law admission test (CLAT) who undergo rigorous theoretical and practical training and uphold high moral principles and human values, are the most promising treasure of the University to serve the bar, judiciary, institutions of governance, commercial houses, public and private institutions, academics and the civil society at large. Our students undertake internship and training with the bar and bench, law firms, national and international governmental institutions, think-tanks, NGOs, among others. We, at the GNLU, take great proud on their commitment to the society.

Research-based Teaching University: Our faculty enjoys providing best education possible to students through classrooms teaching, clinical training, and extracurricular activities and prepare them to proud Ambassadors of GNLU. Our faculty keep acquiring the highest standards of knowledge by continuous learning and researching and participating in debates and forum with academic, policy-making institutions, public sector undertakings, among others. Corridors of the GNLU are filled with critical and constructive interactions and dialogue between students and faculty. Both expect the best from each other. Accountability constantly runs through our thoughts. To remain fully abreast with the developments in education, research and training in the nation and world at large is key to our success. We know that India is steadily and gradually influencing global affairs decisively, hence, we would like to ensure our quality academic, research and training contribution in law and inter-disciplinary fields to the nation through journals, publications and papers. Our Visiting Faculty , Foreign Visiting Professor Program and Scholars-in-Residence Programs compliment regular teaching.

Research Centres: GNLU has established and is undertaking full-fledged activities through various research centres: Centre for Law and Economics (GCLE) , Centre for Public International Law (GCPIL) , Centre for Private International Law (GCPrIL) , Centre for Business and Public Policy (GCBPP) , Centre for Constitutional and Administrative Law (GCCAL) , Centre for Environmental and Sustainable Development (GCESD) , Centre for Law and Society (GCLS) , Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (GCPIR), Centre for Sports and Entertainment Law (GCSEL) , Centre for Corporate and Competition Law (GCCCL) , Centre for Banking, Investment and Taxation (GCBIT) and Centre for Foreign Policy and Security Studies (GCFPSS) . Each centre has developed their vision, mission, short and long-term plan to contribute to the University’s overall aim and object. Several centres have dedicated chair such as Microsoft India IPR Chair, ONGC Chair on International Contracts, Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) Chair on Energy Law, Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST) Chair on IPR, Social Welfare Department Chair on Manual Scavenging, Khaitan & Co Chair on Mergers and Acquisitions, Cube Construction Engineering Limited (CCEL) Chair on Real Estate among others. Student Research Development Council and Student Research Groups consolidates the research culture.

GNLU Library is a rich source of law and related literature with more than 40,000 volumes of books, subscription to over 150 print and 3000 electronic journals and 11 databases. GNLU Legal History Museum – the first Legal History Museum of Asia, has started hosting several travelling exhibitions.

Scholarships and funds: GNLU offers financial assistance in various forms, such as, Student Research Associates (SRA), Best Research Paper Awards, international internships, funding for moot court, debate, sports and several curricular and extra-curricular programs and activities. These are student managed programs with mentoring provide by a faculty convener. GNLU Litigation Assistance and Support Scholarship (GLASS) provides scholarship to selected graduating students to pursue career in litigation. GNLU is the only NLU which is implementing Pro-Bono Legal Services requirement as part of under-graduate degree program.

Governance and Administration: Composition of the policy-making and executive bodies of the GNLU ensures that the GNLU continues to get benefit from leading personalities from all walks of life – ranging from the Chief Justice of India to high court judges, executive position holders, such as ministers of education and law to academicians, Bar Council of India and Bar Council of Gujarat Chairman to national and state advocates. We aim to involve, as much as possible, luminaries from other walks of life who can guide and partner to help us in realizing our vision and mission through our medium-term plans (2009-2014 and 2014-2019) . Our RbTU model is complemented by Research-based Administrative University (RbAU) model, thus, teaching, research, training and extension get benefit from well researched administrative practices and norms.

GNLU Campus – truly pleasing facilities: A campus with excellent amenities and facilities spread over in 50 acres of land is a monumental place for anyone to visit and study. Your visit to GNLU will have lasting impression in your memory of India and Gujarat. The Campus created with generous grant of 180 crore Rs (35 million USD) by the Gujarat Government has unique architectural designed buildings and studying, reading, social activities, sports spaces. The campus can provide very comfortable accommodation to 900 students. Its Training Residency can accommodate 180 participants and VIP Residency can offer comfortable stay to 42 persons at any given time. The state-of-art auditorium AURA has 800 persons capacity with latest IT equipment and facilities. The University has one moot hall with sitting capacity of 100 persons plus furniture and fixtures to hold 4 moot at a time. The University moot hall can provide latest facilities to conduct international and national arbitration and mediation facilities. A cricket stadium with capacity of 4000 persons, football ground, basketball and volleyball grounds, tennis courts, badminton courts, cricket practice pitch, indoor sports facilities plus common and floor-specific gymnasium, yoga room for students and visitors are available. Mess and cafeteria cater to the nutritional and culinary tests and requirements throughout the year. Banking, stationary, laundry and facilities are also available. The Water fountain and more than 5000 plants and trees together with green lawns throughout the campus make the University a green campus. Solar panels and water harvesting enable ecological-friendly features of the campus.
