0805-19/1425/01: Condolence Message on Passing Away of Prof (Dr) NR Madhava Menon

It is with deep grief and sadness as also a profound sense of loss, Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) expresses its sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing away of one of the greatest teachers of the present time, Prof (Dr) NR Madhava Menon. He passed away yesterday, the 07th of May 2019. He was 84 years old.

Prof Menon was a great teacher, scholar, educationist and reformer. He is rightly regarded as the father of modern legal education in India. He revolutionised the field of legal education by establishing the National Law School of India University, Bangalore. He served NLSIU as its founding Vice-Chancellor for 12 years. Subsequently, he set up the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) in Kolkata. He served as the founding Vice-Chancellor of NUJS from 1998 to 2003. At the initiation of the Supreme Court of India, he set up the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal.

He also served as Member of the Law Commission of India. For his outstanding public services, in the year 2003, Prof Menon was conferred with ‘Padma Shree’, the fourth highest civilian award in the country. The Government of India appointed him as Member of the Commission on Centre-State Relations (2006-2010). He was also a Member of the Committee on Criminal Justice Reform and the Committee on Restructuring of Higher Education in India. His writings on legal education, legal profession and judicial training are exemplary and have been inspiring one and all.

Most humbly, we all pray for the peace of the departed soul. We also pray to the Almighty to give requisite strength and courage to the members of his family to bear the irretrievable loss.

The faculty members, staff and students at GNLU deeply mourn Prof Menon’s demise.
