About The Fellowship

About the GNLU-SJVN Research Fellowship on Hydro Power Development and Environment Law

In line with GNLU's constant endeavor to identify contemporary legal and other issues faced by our country, at the instance of GNLU and with the recommendation of Ministry of Power, Government of India, Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Ltd., a mini ratna company has established GNLU- SJVN Fellowship on Hydro Power Development and Environment Law and Rehabilitation & Resettlement Laws, dedicated to research and training on issues related to hydropower development, environmental challenges and land acquisition and r&r issues. Renewable energy has emerged as a mechanism to achieve sustainable development. Owing to its essential position, the GNLU-SJVN Research Fellowship on Hydro Power Development and Environment Law aims to complement, supplement and fill research gaps and to further contribute to promote the intellectual inputs to the debate and policy developments on hydro power development. The collaborative GNLU-SJVN Research Fellowship is an effective modality of GNLU and SJVN to address the growing legal concerns of hydropower generation and environmental issues, it also aims to provide sound and sustained legal research, drafting, capacity building and educational assistance to administrative law stakeholders.

Aims and Objectives

The establishment of the research fellowship in GNLU will enable delivery of highly skilled, expert and time bound research inputs focusing on various challenging and emerging legal issues associated with hydro power development and environment laws. To create and maintain quality intellectual capital through education, research, extension, and training for the students, professionals, research scholars, academicians and other stakeholders.

Long Term

Capacity creation and maintenance in Hydro Power Development and Environment and R&R Laws by extension, training, research and awareness through a multidisciplinary approach

Short-Term
  • Development of suitable academic programs in Hydropower and Environment and R&R Laws to provide education, research and training.
  • Providing a framework for analyzing the impact of Hydropower Generation on Environment in development initiatives in the country.
  • Dissemination of knowledge and information through outreach programme.

Training & Extension

Past Events:

1. Guest Lecture on Land Acquisition Law: Policy & Procedure

It was a 2 hour guest lecture organized by GNLU-SJVN Fellowship on Hydro Power Development and Environment Law and Rehabilitation & Resettlement Laws on 28th February 2018 at GNLU, Gandhinagar from 2:30pm to 4:30 pm. Dr. P.K. Agrawal, IAS (Retd.), Administrator and Advocate was the resource person for the lecture. The programme witnessed participation from GNLU as well as other law college like United World.

2. Training Programme on Land Acquisition In Hydropower Development & Judicial Scrutiny

This training programme was specially designed for officers & employees of Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) Limited in Shimla 5th-6th April, 2018

3. Workshop on "Social Impact Assessment: Policy and Procedure"

It was organised on 27th July 2018 at Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar. It developed practical understanding in relation with the principles, procedure and methods that are used to assess and mitigate social impacts, case studies were Social Impact Assessment (SIA in line with the RFCTLARR Act, 2013). The programme witnessed participation from GNLU, Llyod Law College, Gujarat Environment Management Institute (GEMI) and N.W.R. W.S. & Kalpasar Department, Gandhinagar.
