About GNLU Microsoft IPR Chair
For creation and development of superior quality Intellectual Capital through research in the area of IPR law and Policy, for increasing awareness for IPR and promotion of long term research in India. GNLU-Microsoft Chair on IPR Law and Policy Research has been established in the year 2013 with the following objectives:
- Policy Research, education and awareness through multi-disciplinary Approach.
- Providing a framework for analyzing the impact of IPR law and Policy on development and growth of Indian Economy.
- Dissemination of Knowledge and information on IPR Laws and Policy through teaching and outreach Programmes
Microsoft India, the leading corporate entity in India having aim to be a key IT partner to the Indian Government and the local IT Industry and to enhance India's inclusive development and also to serve its customers and consumers is desirous to carry out efficient research in field of Intellectual Property Rights through Research Associate programme by which the budding lawyers can be well introduced with the various issues and challenges of Intellectual Property Rights, so that they can contribute for solving emerging challenges for the betterment of the country. This will also give the law aspirants new field to make their career and to be more equipped with the knowledge of Intellectual Property system and also open a new space for further research and development.
Chair activities are undertaken under the able guidance of Mr. Girma Wolde Micheal (Chair Professor), Dr. Nidhi Buch (Director GNLU-Centre for Intellectual Property Rights & Assistant Professor of Law), Ms. Vaishali Singh (Research Associate-GNLU-Microsoft IPR Chair), along with a group of 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th year undergraduate law students and postgraduate students. The Chair team wishes effective enhancement of knowledge and awareness in this rapidly growing field of law organising various training and extension activities.
The Purpose of, GNLU-Microsoft India Chair- IPR law and Policy Research, is creation and development of superior quality Intellectual Capital through research in the area of IPR law and Policy for increasing awareness and respect for IPR and promotion of long term research and training collaboration between Microsoft India and GNLU.

- Presented Paper entitled 'Relationship between Human Rights and Intellectual Property Law: A Study in light of Traditional Knowledge' at the International Conference on Contemporary Issues and Challenges of Human Rights in the Era of Globalization organized by Gujarat Law Society, Ahmedabad.
- Presented a paper title "From Digital Footprint to Digital Shadow- Is Right to Forgotten, Possible?" in Third International Conference on Law & Technology at UPES, Dehradun.

The session was moderated by Dr. Sobhalata Udapudi, Professor, Gujarat National Law University.
- Discussion Forum: IP today - it matter's: 'Software Patenting in India-In the wake of a revision to the CRI guidelines, 2017'. The discussion was led by Research Associates Ms. Vaishali Singh (GNLU-Microsoft Chair on IPR Laws and Policy Research) and Ms. Hetvi Trivedi (GNLU-GUJCOST Research Centre of Excellence on IPR Laws, Policies and Practices).
- IP Weekly: A Weekly newsletter is a compilation of international and national news on Intellectual Property laws along with analysis of recent case laws, sent to different stakeholders.
- Organized a one day brain storming session on 4th April 2014 on 'Changing Facets of Intellectual Property protection in Software Industries' on two sub themes: (1) Software Patents Protection: Need of the Hour and (2) Intellectual Property Enforcement with Special Reference to Software Piracy in presence of two experts Mr. Nitin Bawsay Executive Vice President, Priya Softweb Solutions Pvt. Ltd, Ahmedabad Mr. Ashish Jha Advocate, Gujarat High Court and the students had participated with great enthusiasm and presented their research work and also opinions from the experts were collected.
Mr. Girma Wolde-Michael along with Ms. Vaishali Singh has done a policy research titled “Status of Standard Essential Patents and FRAND Regime in particular India, EU, USA, China and Japan”. This position paper on standard essential patents (SEPs) focuses on related licensing legal disputes and associated prominent court decisions. The paper explores various judicial approaches taken by Indian and selected courts worldwide with a view to identify trends and propose a balanced position based on substantive decisions that set a legal standard.
Dr. Hardik Parikh, along with Dr. Nidhi Buch, Assistant Professor of Law and the team of students has contributed research inputs to the Controller of Designs in Stakeholder's Meeting for discussing the Design Law Treaty and provisions in Indian Designs Act with respect to Intellectual Property Rights in India, organised at National Institute of Design auditorium jointly with office of Controller General Patents, Designs & Trademarks, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Government of India on 4th February 2014.
