About Centre

INTRODUCTION:

The Centre for Environment, Sustainability, and Climate Justice, was initially founded in 2009 as Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development. With time, as the world evolved to learn about the threats posed by climate change, it incorporated the current name of Centre for Environment, Sustainability and Climate Justice, representing the essence and importance of equitable and fair system to support marginalised & indigenous communities while mitigating the effects of climate change.

The centre has undertaken various activities and events till date. It has launched a quarterly newsletter called “The Green Book,” which gives updates, insights and innovative research in the field of environmental law and policy, fostering environmental awareness and education. The blogs published by the centre aim of serving as a comprehensive medium for sharing information and resources on environmental law and providing insightful commentary, updates, and discussions on the key contemporary topics in environmental law & further share case studies, expert opinions, and recent developments to get a deeper understanding of the field.

As part of this Centre, the Eco Club conducts various activities like plogging and plantation drives to promote environmental cleanliness & conservation. The club also engages in environmental advocacy activities to influence policy and awareness on critical issues. The Centre also hosts regular quizzes to inculcate knowledge about Environmental Law. It has successfully submitted the recommendations to the UN Special Rapporteur for the Right to Development and participated in consultations.

The Centre conducts its annual conference- the ICCJSE (International Conference on Climate Justice & Sustainable Environment), to foster the interdisciplinary dialogue on environmental law, by create a dynamic platform of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to share insights on practices and approaches to environmental challenges. The Centre successfully hosted the 21st IUCN Academy of Environmental Law (AEL) Colloquium in July 2024, marking first of its kind event in India, which brought together a diverse array of stakeholders, including governmental officials, environmentalists, policymakers, and indigenous leaders, from 23 countries across the globe, to address the various environmental challenges.

The Centre also inaugurated the Sudhir Mishra Gold Medal in Environmental Law, in 2024, which gives recognition to academic achievements and legal practices among aspiring legal professionals.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES:

The aim of the centre is to address critical environmental issues while providing students with a platform to engage with multiple stakeholders through various initiatives, activities, and events focussed around contemporary legal, policy, and environmental challenges and their solutions.

The objectives of the centre are:

  • Focus on research in environmental law, addressing global issues like climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable development, while promoting interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance environmental governance.
  • Engage in policy discussions and advocate for legal reforms to strengthen environmental protection at national and international levels, by providing suggestions and offering legal advice to national and international organisations.
  • Foster a global network of environmental law professionals, NGOs and academicians to create a robust ecosystem for exchanging knowledge and resources, with individuals motivated for the cause of environment conservation and strengthening environmental governance.
  • Provide real world solutions for sustainable societies, urban spaces and university campus, by conducting awareness for environmental conservation and its protection, under the aegis of Eco Club.
  • Host international and national symposium/conference to discuss the latest developments in environmental law and foster collaborative projects and research initiatives.
