The GNLU Centre for Law and Society is the focal point for socio-legal research at Gujarat National Law University that facilitates interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research, study and teaching of law and society, and law and legal institutions. The Centre encourages multidisciplinary perspectives to inform analysis and debate on socio-legal issues, thereby providing the richest and most comprehensive approach to research and policy-making.
Findings originating at the Centre will be disseminated through conferences and symposia, journals, in- house student vignettes, and policy white papers.
The foundation of the GNLU Centre for Law and Society is a set of members whose research interests are focused on an interdisciplinary study of the Law and Society. The expertise includes examination of and inquiry into law-related issues from the perspectives of a broad range of disciplines, such as anthropology, communication, critical gender studies, economics, environmental studies, ethnic studies, history, linguistics, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, and urban studies and planning.
Established in 2015, the GNLU Centre for Law and Society is a venture of the Gujarat National Law University.
Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar was established in 2004 and is a statutory university. It is a nodal agency to uplift legal education in the State of Gujarat. There are various committees and GNLU Centre for Law and Society is one of them. This Centre seeks to broaden the vision, mission and objective of bridging the gap between society and law, which has been a fundamental goal of this university since its inception.
The Centre’s vision is to engage scholars, non-profit organisations and policymakers in relevant inquiries and dialogue to impact key social, legal and public policy issues confronting the society –domestically and globally.
The mission of the Centre is to study, reflect on, and promote an understanding of the role of law in society. The aims is to identify issues of contemporary interest and importance, and distil academic expertise and analysis in order to equip practitioners with knowledge of immediate relevance to their work. Our aim is to make our work easily accessible to professionals in government, business, or the law, and in so doing, to bridge the gap between academia and policymaking. We intend to bring together researchers and thinkers at our programs and events and disseminate the insights and analysis of leading decision-makers through briefings, reports, and multimedia presentations. Driven by creativity and curiosity, the Centre strives to fulfil its social, cultural and economic obligations to India and the world.
