  • GCBFL in collaboration with GIFT-IFSC and BSE-IPF organized Round table discussion on the theme “Opportunities for Trading in Overseas Exchanges through IFSC” as on 8th May, 2019. The officials from India INX, India ICC and GIFT-IFSC graced the event. The discussion witnessed huge participation from the professionals, academicians and the student members. The speakers of the event were Mr. Sandip Shah, Lead: IFSC Banking & Capital market (GIFT-IFSC); Mr. Soundararajan, Chief Regulatory Officer, India INX; Mr. Arun Ganeshan, Head of Market Operations, India INX and Mr. Venkat Giridhar, Head of Research, India International Exchange IFSC Limited.
One-day National Symposium on the theme “Demystifying the Interface between Banking and IBC”.
  • GCBFL organized a One-day National Symposium in collaboration with BSE-IPF on the theme “Demystifying the Interface between Banking and IBC” as on 21st September, 2019. The symposium was divided into four technical sessions, each session dealt with a pertinent theme governing the evolution, challenges and future of IBC. The event witnessed vast participation from GNLU students, outside students and academicians. The symposium was graced with the eminent speakers- Mr. Anish Mashruwala, Partner, J. Sagar Associates; Mr. M R Umarji, Former Member, Bankruptcy Law Reform Committee; Dr. P. Syamjith Chief Manager (Law), State Bank of India, Corporate Clients Group Regional Office Ahmedabad and Mr. Bikash Jhawar, Partner, Luthra and Luthra.
Inaugural lecture of Investor Protection Expert Lecture Series (IPELS) on the topic ‘Insider Trading: Regulatory Framework in India’
  • GNLU Centre for Banking and Financial Laws (GCBFL) in collaboration with GNLU Centre for Corporate and Competition Law (GCCCL) had organized an Inaugural lecture of Investor Protection Expert Lecture Series (IPELS) on the topic “Insider Trading: Regulatory Framework in India” on 8th April 2019. The speaker of the event was Ms. Reena Desai, Company Secretary, Gujarat State Petronet Ltd. (GSPL).

  • The GNLU Centre for Banking and Financial Laws (GCBFL) in collaboration with GIFT-IFSC and in association with BSE-IPF organized a Round Table Discussion on the theme “Opportunities for Legal Firms in GIFT International Financial Services Centre” on 28th February, 2019 during 1500-1600 hours. The event was graced with the presence of our eminent speakers- Mr. Nitin Potdar Senior Corporate Lawyer & M&A Partner at J. Sagar Associates; Prof (Dr) Bimal N. Patel Director & Professor of Public International Law Gujarat National Law University, Member National Security Advisory Board; Dr. Ravindra Kumar Singh Dean, Faculty and Academic Affairs and Shri Dipesh Shah Head (IFSC & Strategy), Gujarat International Finance Tech-City.
  • Participants included representatives from J.Sagar Associates, Khaitan Legal, Knovos, MSKA & Associates, Karvy IFSC, and AC Damani Advocates; GNLU faculty; students of GNLU and GIFT officials.
  • The event accomplished with the fruitful discussion on extensive opportunities for lawyers in GIFT city; enormous career possibilities for law students in GIFT city and need for bringing our focus on Aircraft Leasing, Maritime Law and Sports Law in context of GIFT.
Certificate Course on “Business Regulations on International Financial Services Centre (IFSC)
  • The Centre in collaboration with the Gujarat International Fin-Tec City (GIFT City) launched their first joint certificate course on “Business Regulations on International Financial Services Centre (IFSC); which spanned from 8th to 12th January. The course aimed to equip participants with the knowledge about International Financial Services Centre in general, and the intricacies involved in the functioning of International Financial Services Centre in India. The Course was designed to enable participants with both the theoretical a well as practical knowledge of the workings and challenges of International Financial transactions.
Round-Table on the theme “Using Dispute Resolution through the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) at GIFT”
  • The Centre in collaboration with GIFT-IFSC and the BSE-IPF had also organized a Round-Table on the theme “Using Dispute Resolution through the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) at GIFT.” on 8th January, the esteemed speakers at the round table were Hon’ble Justice Mr. Mohit S. Shah, Former Chief Justice, Bombay High Court; Mr. Ashishkumar Chauhan, MD & CEO, Bombay Stock Exchange; Mr. Pranav Mago, Head South Asia, Singapore International Arbitration Centre; Dr. Bimal N.Patel, Director, Gujarat National Law University.

International Conference on Banking and Finance 2018
  • GNLU Centre for Business and Public Policy (GCBPP) and GNLU Centre for Banking and Financial Laws (GCBFL) had organized an International Conference on Banking and Finance 2018 on 17-18 March, 2018 at GNLU, Gandhinagar (Gujarat). The Conference aimed to be a confluence of thoughts on contemporary issues of banking and finance in international as well as national context. The sub themes of the Conference included Global Banks, New International Regional and Multilateral Banks, BASEL Norms, recognition of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) in Indian Banks, Recapitalization of Indian PSU Banks, Restructuring and Consolidation in the Banking Sector, Reforms in the Banking System, International Opportunities for Indian Banks, Need for Legal Reforms in the Banking Sector, Global Financial Crisis, Global Financial Integration and Disintegration, Global Mergers and Acquisitions, Cyber Threats in International Financial System, Major International Financial Centres (IFCs), Global Competitiveness Indices and Green Financing. The conference served as a platform for exchange of scholarly views of people of eminence in the field of Banking and Finance and insights from leading Industry practitioners. Participants will include academicians, scholars, researchers, executives, nominees of leading institutions and think-tanks involved in the field of Banking and Finance across the world and students.
GNLU-GIFT Knowledge Series round table on the theme of “Providing International Financial Services through the IFSC at the GIFT"
  • GNLU in collaboration with Gujarat International Financial Tech City- GIFT organized a Round Table on "Providing International Financial Services through the IFSC at the GIFT" on 06 November, 2017.The speakers for the round table were Shri Sanjeev Sanyal, Principal Economic Advisor, Ministry of Finance, Government of India; Shri Ashishkumar Chauhan, Managing Director & CEO, Bombay Stock Exchange; Shri Neeraj Gambhir, Managing Director & Head, Fixed Income India, Nomura Holdings Inc.; Shri Dipesh Shah, Head (IFSC & Strategy), Gujarat International Finance Tech-City; and Dr. Bimal N. Patel, Director, Gujarat National Law University . The key deliberations in the round table revolved around the mind-set regarding GIFT amongst the various stakeholders, the role that GIFT can play in facilitating the exchange and flow of capital, the demand and need for an unified regulator in India and its model and structure, taxation issues faced by the companies operating out of GIFT and how to make the taxation regime competitive with the taxation regimes of other IFSCs, and the institutional and urban ecosystems of GIFT.
  • The deliberations were positive both for the practitioners at GIFT as well as the regulators and the government. It highlighted the key areas that need to be worked upon by all the stakeholders together, in order to ensure that the IFSC is able to realize its objectives.
Financial literacy camp in koba, gandhinagar
  • GNLU through its Centre for Banking and Financial Laws (GCBFL) organized a Financial Literacy Camp at Koba, Gandhinagar on 14th April 2017. The Camp saw participation of over 100 residents of the area and was conducted by the students of the GNLU. The Financial Literacy camp’s course was developed under the guidance of Mrs. Garima Goswami (Centre Director, GCBFL). It consisted of presentations and interactions on various government schemes, Mudra banking and E-wallets. The participants were taught how to use the government scheme to their advantage, how to obtain loans for new Entrepreneurial ventures through Mudra Banking and how to use E-wallets to make E-payments.
The inaugural lecture of gnlu-gift knowledge series on the theme of "international financial services centre: the journey so far and road ahead"
  • GNLU in collaboration with Gujarat International Financial Tech City- GIFT (India’s first international financial centre) organized the inaugural lecture of the GNLU-GIFT knowledge lecture series through its Centre for Banking and Financial Laws (GCBFL) on 29th August,2017. The event was on the theme ‘International Financial Services Centre: The Journey So far and Road Ahead’. The Panelists for the event were Shri Ajay Pandey, Managing Director & Group CEO, Gujarat International Finance Tech-City, Shri Ashishkumar Chauhan, Managing Director & CEO, Bombay Stock Exchange, Shri Dipesh Shah, Head (IFSC & Strategy), Gujarat International Finance Tech-City, Ms. Madhabi Puri Buch, Whole-Time Member, Securities and Exchange Board of India. The panelists discussed various components and perspectives on GIFT and the road ahead for India’s Economy. The discussions also pertained to SEBI, RBI and IRDA provisions and regulations which ease the mechanism of International Financial Tech Cities. An elaborated overview of GIFT was also offered consisting of Banking, Capital Market and Insurance. The discussions by the panelists were followed by the question answer session and vote of thanks.
GIFT IFSC signs mou with GNLU for skill development
  • The International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) at Gujarat International Finance-Tec City (GIFT IFSC) has signed an agreement with Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) to collaborate on efforts for skill development in the field of international financial services. As per the MoU, GIFT IFSC and GNLU would work jointly towards courses, training and certificate programs in the field of international financial services law, the company said in a statement today. The association would promote the deeper acceptance of financial laws with regards to global financial markets, it said. "IFSC being new a concept, theres a pressing need to enhance understanding its various aspects. Through this MOU, we hope to help edify law professionals on IFSC rules, arbitration and regulations concerning global financial transactions," said Dipesh Shah, Head ? IFSC and strategy, GIFT IFSC. "Our aim is to reach out to all relevant stakeholders in India and make them proficient in this relatively new field of financial law," said Shah. Under the MoU, GNLU will introduce a new course on International Financial Services Centre from its June 2017 semester. It will also organise a program for lawyers covering IFSC, international arbitration and related fields. GNLU will also encourage its masters/ degree students to undertake certification program in the field of international law and international financial services. The MOU will also look into developing and conducting programs in financial market along with GIFT and other institutions based out of GIFT IFSC, the release stated. "Since one of the agenda of the MoU is to create more awareness about the fundamentals of an IFSC, a knowledge series will be routinely organised under the banner of GIFT IFSC and GNLU," he said. GNLU Director Bimal Patel said, "our partnership opens new doors to gain experience on international financial laws and regulations. We would the first university in India to start a regular course on IFSC. This will also provide hands on international experience in financial law to our students and given them a competitive edge in placement."
Lecture Series on International Financial Service Centre
  • The GNLU Centre for Banking and Financial Laws (GCBFL), in association with Gujarat International Finance Tec-City Company Ltd. (GIFT), organised the first and second lecture of the Lecture Series on “International Financial Services Centre (IFSC): An Overview” and “Business Perspectives and International Financial Services Centre” on the 23rd August, 2016 at Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Dipesh Shah, Vice President (IFSC & Strategy) GIFT, to the students of GNLU in the presence of Ms. Garima Goswami, Assistant Professor of Law, GNLU and Mr. Divya Tyagi, Assistant professor of Law, GNLU. The programme witnessed participation of over forty students from the LL.M, M.B.A. (Financial Management and Business Laws) and LL.B batches of GNLU.
Certificate Course on Applied Insurance Laws and Prevailing Industry Practices
  • Gujarat National Law University in Collaboration with ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd. organized “Certificate Course on Applied Insurance Laws and Prevailing Industry Practices” for the academic year 2016-17, which commenced on 22nd August, 2016. The certificate course is designed to equip the students with skills to meet the challenges in risk & insurance, business economics, legal compliance and allied jobs in the insurance and financial services industry and to function effectively in their respective assignments. Resource Persons shall be comprised of experts from insurance and financial services industry identified for this purpose by ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co. Ltd. This was a One year course wherein, ICICI Lombard conducted at least 40 lectures i.e. 20 lectures per semester. On the successful conduction of the Certificate course, ICICI Lombard offered employment to one student.
GNLU - ONGC Quiz Competition on International Contracts
  • With an aim to develop expertise and disseminate knowledge in the field of law of International Contracts, The Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) in collaboration with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) organised an intra-college Quiz Competition on International Contracts under the ONGC Fellowship on 25/04/2016. It was a general quiz open to all students of GNLU. This quiz competition had two rounds and the Top 7 participating teams from the elimination round qualified for the final round. Top three teams in the final round received cash prizes and certificates
1st National Banking Law Essay Competition on 2nd February 2016
  • The Centre organized 1st National Banking Law Essay Competition on 2nd February 2016, for law students across India. The aim for the competition was to bring awareness among law students about the contemporary issues in the area of Banking Law. Themes for the competition were, (1) Issues & Challenges in Recovery of Debt: India, (2) Financial Sector Legislative Reform Commission: An Effective Tool, (3) Asset Reconstruction Companies: An Aid in Signing off stress, (4) Mergers & Acquisitions: Active or Dormant In India, (5) FDIs: A boom to the Banking Sector, (6) KYCs & FATF: Building up a Better Banking Structure, (7) Priority Sector Lending: Revamps by Banking Sector, (8) Islamic Banking: A Step towards a New World, (9) Consumer Protection in banking services: How Far is it Active? Top three winners of the competition received cash prize as well as Certificate of Merit.
Organized Seminar on Legal Careers in Financial Markets in association with BSE, Mumbai IIFS, and Ahmedabad on 21st July, 2014
  • The financial services industry is highly regulated & the lawyers have credentials that are significantly in demand in vibrant Indian financial market. Gujarat National Law University's, “Center for Banking Investment & Taxation” in collaboration with Bombay Stock Exchange and Indian Institute of Financial Services, Ahmedabad organized a Seminar on “Legal Careers in Financial Markets” on 21st July 2014.

    The seminar began with a welcome address by Prof. Amit Kashyap, Director Center for Banking Investment & Taxation emphasizing the need for trained legal minds in Financial Industry & plethora of jobs available in Indian Financial Markets for Regulatory & Compliance professionals. The Seminar was chaired by Mr. DC Anjaria, Director, IIFS Ahmedabad, Mr. Jai Sharda, Associate Director, IIFS Ahmedabad, Mr. Mahesh Pandya, BSE Investor Protection Department, Mr. Rashesh Parikh, Advocate, Gujarat High Court. With an endeavor of promoting prominence in financial Industry along with Legal field, Mr. Jai Sharda addressed various options available for super-specialization in the arena of Financial Laws. Mr. D C Anjaria, enlightened the students about various regulatory aspects of financial industry & need for trained lawyers in each aspect. Mr. Mahesh pandya, elucidated about the BSE initiatives for the protection of Investors in Financial market & addressed the dearth of competent & expert lawyers working in the arena of Investor Protection. Mr. Rashesh Parikh spoke about the practical challenges that comes while handling the case related to financial issues & complications that comes because of lack of knowledge about finance or financial market. In order to cater to this niche area of Legal Practice, GNLU Center for Banking, Investment & Taxation through this event launched a Diploma program in “Financial Market & Regulations”, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Financial Services, Ahmedabad which was open for all the stakeholders interested in financial regulations specialization. Further, Bombay Stock Exchange provided 14 scholarships to the students who took up admission in Diploma in Financial Market & regulations and also supported the aforesaid program with their knowledge database & recourses.

Also through this collaboration both the entities tried to develop an inter-disciplinary environment for the students to deal with the growing demands of the Financial Markets.

    The Financial Markets and Regulation Diploma was the First in a series of Legal and Regulatory Programs which aimed at covering Banking, Insurance and other Financial Services industry segments as well.
Organized Stock Mind Session in collaboration with the ICICI Securities Ltd., Ahmedabad on 19th February, 2016
  • The Centre organized Stock Mind Session in collaboration with the ICICI Securities Ltd., Ahmedabad on 19 February 2016. Stock mind is the largest knowledge based inter college game wherein Students got a chance to represent the college and go in finale. It gave the students a chance to get knowledge and earn cash prize worth Rs. 1 lakh. It was an initiative to impart financial knowledge on the money market (Primary and secondary) in an easy and interesting manner. Participation was free, with all students receiving certificates for their enthusiasm.
