Capacity Building Workshop on 'Role of Legal Stakeholders in Strengthening and Implementation of the Biological Diversity Act with Special Focus on ABS Provisions'
The Centre for Environmental Law (GCEL) at Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), along with the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Gujarat Biodiversity Board (GBB), National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) and Global Environmental Facility (GEF) organised a capacity-building workshop on 'Role of Legal Stakeholders in Strengthening and Implementation of the Biological Diversity Act with Special Focus on ABS Provisions’ on 27th September 2014 at the University Campus.
Dr. J.A. Khan, PCCF and Chairman, Gujarat Biodiversity Board inaugurated the Workshop. Dr. Khan in his address highlighted the importance of Biodiversity and gave a brief introduction of the Gujarat Biodiversity Board, while informing the gathering about the various vital species and the biodiversity found in Gujarat. Dr. A.P. Singh, Member Secretary, Gujarat Biodiversity Board in an exclusive session on Biodiversity, spoke on the intricacies and the legal challenges that the Biodiversity Board faces on a daily basis, while working towards the protection of Biodiversity of Gujarat. Dr. Aeshita Mukherjee-Wilske, State Coordinator, UNEP-GEF-MoEF-ABS Project, informed the participants about the practical aspects of Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) mechanism under Biodiversity Act and also the problems the board faces, while tackling these issues. Mr. Jayadeepsinh Vaghela, Advocate, Gujarat High Court, also enlightened the participants with his views on Biodiversity Conservation. Prof. Dr. Shobhalata Udapudi, Professor of Law, GNLU, addressed the legal perspective, issues and challenges for the implementation of the Biodiversity Act, 2002.
Constitution of GNLU-GBB Legal Advisory Board
The legal advisory board of GNLU faculty members has been constituted to advise Gujarat Biodiversity Board for on call legal consultations, assisting and facilitating the Board to carry out intents and objectives of the Biodiversity Act with special reference to ABS provisions.
