Mr. Justice R. K. Abhichandani was until recently
a judge of the Gujarat High Court. Son of judge, he holds a double Masters degree
in Law. One, in Mercantile Law and Criminal Law, and the other in Constitution Law
and Public International Law, he has had a distinguished career as a Legal Practitioner
before the High Court. He has taught law in Honorary Position for about 12 years.
He joined the judiciary 1978 and elevated as a judge of the High Court in 1990.
He has edited a number of Standard Commentaries in Indian Law and published a number
of papers that bring out an active academic mind. His monograph entitled "New
Biology and Criminal Investigation" (with a Schedule of Model DNA Legislation
proposed) breaks new ground in a frontier area of sciences. |

Professor Dr. Yoginder K. Alagh is a former
Vice-Chairman, Sardar Patel Institute of Economic and Social Growth, Ahmedabad.
He has been a Member of Parliament, Union Minister for Science and Technology, Vice-Chancellor
of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and Chairman of the Agricultural
Prices Commission. A well known expert in development economics, he is a UNDP Consultant.
He did a field survey for the Government of India on the actual stake holders in
the Kaveri Water problem. Professor Alagh writes extensively and regularly on regional
rural economic issues. |

Professor Dr. R. P. Anand , Professor
Emeritus of International Law, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi is the patriarch
of the ‘Third World’ school of International Law in India. A member
of the Institute of International Law, he has written extensively and produced generations
of students. He was a consultant to the UN Secretary-General on the Law of the Sea.
He is a specialist in International Disputes Settlement and Law of the Sea, besides
History of International Law. He is the fourth Indian to have been invited to deliver
the summer lectures at The Hague Academy of International Law.

Professor Upendra Baxi formerly, Professor
of Law, University of Warwick, UK is an LLM (Bombay) and (Berkeley), and JSD (Berkeley,
UC), he was Professor of Law(1973-1996) and Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi
(1990-1994) and University of South Gujarat (1982-1985), and Honorary Director (Research),
The Indian Law Institute(1985-1988). He was Visiting Professor at Duke Law School
(1987-1988): American University, Washington D. C. (1994-1995), Global Law Program,
New York University (1996, 1999). He taught at Sydney Law School (1968-1973). His
areas of special interest include comparative constitutionalism, social theory of
human rights, law and globalization, science technology and human rights. A prolific
writer, Professor Baxi’s recent writings include a trilogy on the Bhopal Case,
the Rights of Subordinated Peoples’ (with Oliver Medelsohn, 1995) and Law
and Poverty: Critical Essays (1989). He prepared two reports on legal education
for the University Grants Commission of India One, towards a Socially Relevant Legal
Education (1975) and the other, a two-volume report on Curricular Development in
Law (1991). The University of La Trobe, Australia and the National Law School of
India University, Bangalore, have honoured him with the award of doctorate honoris
causa.

Mr. Justice P. N. Bhagwati is known worldwide
for his monumental contributions in a variety of fields – human rights law,
constitutional law, institutionalization of legal aid services etc. His stewardship
at the Supreme Court of India in the 1970’s paved the way for judicial activism
in India. He has been a member and Chairman of the UN Human Rights Committee and
performed a number of special missions for the UN. He was also associated in the
formulation of the new constitution for South Africa. He co-authored an OAU report
on the genocide in Rwanda, whose findings indeed shocked the conscience of humankind
and put international organisations to shame. He is Honorary Professor Supernumerary
at GNLU.

Professor James R Crawford ,
Q.C, is currently Whewell Professor of International Law and Chair of the Faculty
of Law, attached to Jesus College, University of Cambridge, UK. Formerly Dean of
Faculty of Laws, Sydney University, he has been a prolific writer in international
law and has published numerous books and articles. He is a practitioner of International
Law par excellence. He has drafted a number of pieces of legislation for Australia.
He has advised governments on legal matters. He was a member of United Nations International
Law Commission. He has appeared before the International Court of Justice, UN Law
the Sea Tribunal and various other international tribunals, representing States
and corporations. He has been an Arbitrator in a number of disputes. Currently Prof.
Crawford offers two courses at Cambridge, namely, Foundations of International Law
and Settlement of International Disputes. Among his monumental works as a Rapporteur
for the International Law Commission, the final draft articles on State Responsibility
2001 and the draft Statute for an International Criminal Court 1994 stand out.

Dr. Gavan Griffith , QC has
been one of the longest serving the Solicitors-General of Australia – he served
Australian Federal Government in that capacity from 1984 to 1998. He was associated
with a good number of important constitutional and other cases before the High Court
of Australia, International Court of Justice and in other jurisdictions. He represented
Australia in the Certain Phosphate Lands in Nauru case as well as in the East Timor
case. He was also associated with the evolution of UNCITRAL Model Rules of Arbitration.
He has represented Australia in a large number of International Legal Conferences.
A Ph.D. from Oxford University, he was called to the English Bar at Lincoln’s
Inn in 1969. He was also involved in a large number of international commercial
arbitrations. He is a prolific writer on International Litigation.

Sir Kenneth Keith of New Zealand is a judge
in the International Court of Justice, The Hague. He was earlier a judge of the
Supreme Court of New Zealand. He began his academic career at the Faculty of Law,
University of Victoria, Wellington where he was Dean and Professor of Law for a
long time. He has written extensively on several aspects of law, including international
humanitarian law and the ICJ.

Justice Michael Kirby is a judge in the High
Court of Australia since 1996. He was earlier President of the New South Wales Court
of Appeals. He has had a long practice at the Australian Bar. He was a President
of the Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission. He has had with distinction
of being the first Chairperson of the Australian Law Reform Commission from 1975
to 1984. He also had a stint at international diplomacy when he was appointed UN
Special Representative in Cambodia. He was President of the International Commission
of Jurists. He was decorated with Companion in the General Division of the Order
of Australia in 1991. A delightful speaker, lately he has been a staunch supporter
of Anti-Aids Campaign.

Professor Dr. Franz Van der Dunk is Professor
and Co-Director of the International Institute of Air and Space Law, Faculty of
Law, University of Leiden, Leiden the Netherlands. He is a prolific writer on international

He is an elected Director of the Institute.

Professor Dr. Ram Jakhu is Associate Professor
at the Institute of Air and Space Law, in the Faculty of Law, McGill University,
Montreal, Canada. He is also Director, Centre for the Study of Regulated Industries.

of governments, particularly in the West Indies. A member of the International Institute
of Space Law, his contribution to space law has been considerable.

Professor Dr. K. Kasturirangan ,
is currently a Member of Parliament and Director, Institute of Advanced Study, National
Institute of Sciences, Bangalore and a member of the Space Commission of India.
A former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation and Secretary to Government
of India in the Department of Space, Dr. Kasturirangan is one of the eminent Indian
Space Scientists. During his stewardship ISRO developed indigenously the cryogenic
engine technology that was denied to it under the Missile Technology Control Regime.
ISRO achieved many milestones during his leadership. He has been decorated by the
President of India with Padma Vibhushan title and is a recipient of numerous national
and international awards.

Professor Dr. N. R. Madhava Menon is a builder
of institutions of legal education par excellence. The National Law School System
in India carries his brand name. It ushered in a gush of fresh air in the state
of legal education in the country. He set up the National Law School of India University
in Bangalore and the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences in Kolkata,
and was the founder Director of National Judicial Academy, Bhopal. In recognition
of his contributions to legal education, the Bar Council of India elected him as
an Honorary Member and the President of India decorated him with the title of Padmashree.
His forte is Criminal Law, and he was a member of the Justice Malimath Committee
on Reform of the Criminal Justice system. The concept of legal aid clinic introduced
at the Law Faculty of the Delhi University long ago in 1970’s was his contribution.
He was also a Member of the Law Commission of India. Recognised worldwide, he has
travelled far and wide. He has written equally extensively on various subjects of
law and legal education. He has been one of the visionaries of GNLU.

Professor Dr. Ved P. Nanda is University of
Denver Vice Provost for Internationalisation. He is also Evans University Professor
and Thompson G. Marsh Professor of Law, University of Denver College of Law, Denver,
Colorado, USA. He has written extensively on various aspects of International Law
and Human Rights. His article on the Bangladesh War of 1971 in the American Journal
of International Law and others on International Criminal Law and Environmental
Law are particularly noteworthy. Professor Nanda has been one of the visionaries
of GNLU, having participated since 2000 in discussions that finally led to the establishment
of GNLU.

Justice Ramesh Chandra Lahoti is a former
Chief Justice of India (2004-05). He began his career as a legal practitioner and
he was appointed as the Judge in the High Court of Madhya Pradesh in 1988. He was
also a judge in the Delhi High Court before he was evaluated to the Supreme Court
of India in 1998. The first Visitor/Chancellor of GNLU, he made the inaugural meeting
of its General Council possible by convening it in the premises of Supreme Court
of India on 2nd April 2005.

Professor Dr. Rahmatullah Khan ,
formerly Professor holding the Jawaharlal Nehru Chair in International Environmental
Law, is a pioneer teacher-researcher to introduce in India International Trade Law,
Comparative Law and International Environmental Law. His specialisations include
the United Nations, Human Rights and Terrorism, the Law of Armed Conflict, and claims
arbitrations, besides the above subjects. He closely worked with the US-Iran Claims
Arbitration. Recently he was awarded the prestigious Humboldt Fellowship for outstanding
services as a teacher. He has long been associated with Max Planck Institute of
Comparative Public Law and International Law, Heidelberg, Germany. He was also a
Visiting Professor in Human Rights at Lund University, Sweden. He is Secretary General
and Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of International Law.

Judge Dr. Abdul G. Koroma , Barrister
at Law, is a Judge on the International Court of Justice. An eminent international
lawyer and legal practitioner from Sierra Leone, he has considerable practical and
governmental experience. He has been an Ambassador for his country 1989-92. He represented
Sierra Leone at the UN bodies from 1977-1994, and a number of international conferences.
He was involved in the drafting of the Statute of the International Criminal Court.
He was a member of the UN International Law Commission. He has served as an expert
consultant for ICRC, and have given lectures in several countries including India,
China, Canada and USA. He has written extensively on various aspects of international
law, including human rights, humanitarian law, law of the sea, disarmament and international
settlement of disputes.

he has, among his several works, a book on Law and Sociology. He is currently working

been substantial and his writings extensive. He has been the President of the Arbitration
Tribunal of the Bank International Settlements. He has appeared before the UN Law

Professor Dr. Mahendra Pal Singh is Professor
of Law, Delhi University. He is a former Dean of Faculty of Law, Delhi University.

book in many German Universities. Above all, he has been an outstanding teacher

Dr. M. S. Swaminathan is generally known
in India as the Father of the Green Revolution in the 1960’s, which laid the
foundation for food security. He is the Chairman of the National Commission on Agriculture
and heads the M.S. Swaminathan Institute for Agricultural Research. An active member
and one-time President of International Union of Scientists for Conservation of
Nature (IUCN), he is the recipient of a number of prestigious international awards.
His life’s mission is the progressive modernisation of Indian agriculture.

International Law in the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He is a senior member

Mr. K. K. Venugopal , a recipient
of Padma Bhushan from the President of India is one of the most respected Senior
Advocates of the Indian Supreme Court. A renowned jurists, he is a well-known specialist

More than anything else, he is a great philanthropist and has played a central role
in promoting legal education reforms and supporting the National Law School system
both within the Bar Council of India and outside. He is one of the very few eminent

Judge Christopher G. Weeramantry is an Emeritus
Professor of Law at Monash University, Victoria, Australia where he was for long
Professor of Law, after he relinquished his Judgeship in the Sri Lankan Federal
Court. He has been a consultant to various governments. His contributions to the
‘Third World’ perspectives on International Law have been significant.
He was a judge on the International Court of Justice. His specialisation encompasses
human rights, rights of the indigenous peoples, culture and law, environmental law,
etc. His passion is nuclear disarmament and human welfare. In 2006 he was selected

Mr. Soli Jehangir Sorabji , Barrister-at-Law
and Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, is one of the few luminaries of the
Indian legal profession, whose presence and statements are noted worldwide. He started
his legal career in he renewed Chambers of Sir Jamshedji Kanga which also produced
his senior, Nani Palkivala. Mr. Sorabji made a mark very early at the Bombay Bar.
An authority on Constitutional Law, he has argued all kinds of cases, ranging from
the law of rents to criminal law, to customs and excise, to telecommunications law.
In 1977 He was appointed Additional Solicitor-General, and soon Solicitor-General,
and in 1989 Attorney-General,an office he was called upon to adorn again a decade
later. He led the Indian delegation of legal counsel to the International Court
of Justice in the Atlantique case against Pakistan in 2000, which India won hands
down. The Supreme Court has many times sought his legal advice on many a Ricky issue.
He has participated in a number of commercial and corporate arbitrations. Mr. Sorabji
has represented India in many international legal fora, and also in international
human rights bodies. A ardent fan of jazz music he has been closely involved in
jazz festivals. Mr. Sorabji stands for impartiality, openness, and humanity. Decorated
by the President of India National award of Padma Vibhushan for his many services
in the field of human rights, Mr. Sorabjee is Honorary Professor Supernumerary.
