About GNLU-Microsoft IPR Chair:

Pursuant to Section 52, GNLU Act 2003, the Microsoft Corporation India Pvt. Company (here in after referred as “Microsoft India”), having its principle business seat in New Delhi establishes a Chair on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Law and Policy Research, for development and growth of thought leadership in IPR Law and Policy' in the count at the Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar (hereinafter referred as GNLU).

About Microsoft India:

Microsoft India, the leading corporate entity in India having aim to be a key IT partner to the Indian Government and the local IT Industry and to enhance India’s inclusive development and also to serve its customers and consumers is desirous to carry out efficient research in field of Intellectual Property Rights through Research Associate programme by which the budding lawyers can be well introduced with the various issues and challenges of Intellectual Property Rights, so that they can contribute for solving emerging challenges for the betterment of the country. This will also give the law aspirants new field to make their career and to be more equipped with the knowledge of Intellectual Property system and also open a new space for further research and development.


The Purpose of, GNLU-Microsoft India Chair- IPR law and Policy Research, is creation and development of superior quality Intellectual Capital through research in the area of IPR law and Policy for increasing awareness and respect for IPR and promotion of long term research and training collaboration between Microsoft India and GNLU.

Aims and Objectives:

  • Policy Research, education and awareness through multi-disciplinary Approach.
  • Providing a framework for analyzing the impact of IPR law and Policy on development and growth of Indian Economy.
  • Dissemination of Knowledge and information on IPR Laws and Policy through teaching and outreach Programmes

The programmes which has been conducted includes..

  • A Seminar on “Importance of IT Compliance in Automobile Industry – Benefits of Strengthening Your Supply Chain” on 28th January 2014 with collaboration of FICCI in which various stakeholders participated.
  • Mr Hardik Parikh, along with Ms. Nidhi Buch, Assistant Professor of Law and the team of students has contributed research inputs to the Controller of Designs in Stakeholder’s Meeting for discussing the Design Law Treaty and provisions in Indian Designs Act with respect to Intellectual Property Rights in India, organised at National Institute of Design auditorium jointly with office of Controller General Patents, Designs & Trademarks, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Government of India on 4th February 2014.
  • Mr Hardik is also a course coordinator for Intellectual Property Law and he guides the students of UG as well as PG level in the subject of Intellectual Property Law.
  • Mr. Hardik has also constituted a Student Research Action Group under the Research Associate and the group will contribute for organisation of various programmes under the Research Associate.

  • Presented Paper entitled 'Relationship between Human Rights and Intellectual Property Law: A Study in light of Traditional Knowledge' at the International Conference on Contemporary Issues and Challenges of Human Rights in the Era of Globalization organized by Gujarat Law Society, Ahmedabad on 2nd and 3rd August 2014.
  • Organised a one day brain storming session on 4th April 2014 on ‘Changing Facets of Intellectual Property protection in Software Industries’ on two sub themes: (1) Software Patents Protection: Need of the Hour and (2) Intellectual Property Enforcement with Special Reference to Software Piracy in presence of two experts Mr. Nitin Bawsay Executive Vice President, Priya Softweb Solutions Pvt. Ltd, Ahmedabad Mr. Ashish Jha Advocate, Gujarat High Court and the students had participated with great enthusiasm and presented their research work and also opinions from the experts were collected.
  • Published a Research Paper on “Protection of Traditional Knowledge: A burning question in Current Intellectual Property Rights regime” in International Journal of Education for Human Services, Vol. 4 No. 2 June, 2014, ISSN: 0976-1128
