GCRCJS is organizing a Guest Lecture on "Reformation in the criminal justice system: Understanding the principles of parole, furlough and restorative justice in India" on September 16, 2023 i.e., Saturday from 11 a.m. onwards. The distinguished speaker for the event is the esteemed judge of the Gujarat High Court, "Hon'ble Ms. Justice Nisha M. Thakore."

Title: "Reforming the criminal justice system of India: exploring the concepts of parole & furlough and unlocking the 2nd chance from the lens of principle restorative justice in India"

Following are the details about the Distinguished Speaker and the Guest Lecture:

About the Distinguished Speaker:

Hon'ble Ms. Justice Nisha M. Thakore is serving as Hon'ble Justice at the Gujarat High Court. Her Ladyship joined the legal fraternity as an advocate enrolled with the Bar Council of Gujarat in September 2002. Ma'am started her career working on civil matters and later worked on land and service-related laws. She has experience of advocating on taxation and criminal law matters in her journey as an advocate.

Later, she was appointed as an Assistant Government Pleader at the Gujarat High Court, dealing with Service Laws, Labour Laws, and Contempt of Courts. She later joined the prosecution team and was appointed to the post of Additional Public Prosecutor, dealing with matters of Bail, Quashing, Criminal Appeals, and Habeas Corpus.

She also has experience working as a Panel Advocate, Liquidator, and Advocate of the Office of Registrar, Gujarat High Court.

Finally, she was elevated to the bench as an esteemed judge at Gujarat High Court on October 18, 2021. She is known for her sharp knowledge and application of law while presiding over matters in the court. Her knowledge and comprehension of criminal law (both substantive and procedural), the way by which she hears pleadings before her and ensures complete and fair justice, and withholding the law of the land is a source of learning and inspiration for the students of the legal fraternity.

About the Guest Lecture:

In order to further qualitative discussion on the intricacies of criminal law, and to inspire the young students pursuing law at Gujarat National Law University, Her Ladyship will be delivering a guest lecture on "Exploring Parole and Furlough: Enhancing Understanding and Reformation in India's Criminal Justice System".

Her Ladyship will talk about the following topics in her guest lecture:

  • Parole & Furlough: The principle, the law, and the practice by courts
  • Practice of Restorative Justice System in India
  • The need and work towards Reformation in Criminal Justice System

The guest lecture is being organised by the Centre for Research in Criminal Justice Sciences to encourage practical learning of law by understanding & analysing the judicial perspective on key issues prevailing in the legal fraternity. The session will help the students get a unique and on-ground perspective of Criminal Justice in practice and help them understand the key criminal law concepts in detail.
